Concept
John Cleese is a famous comedian, actor, producer, and screenwriter. He is most famous for being the founder of the comedy troupe Monty Python, as well as the star of the Monty Python films. Having found success and fame through his creativity, he was asked to give a lecture style speech about creativity in 1991. His speech is called “Creativity in Management”. I have created a collectible book based on this famous speech.
I wanted the book to somewhat be a visual representation of getting into Cleese’s head space and being able to visualize the way that he thinks, as described in his speech. By doing that I cut out sections in each layer of paper, that when laid on top of each other create an image of Cleese’s face.
One of the quotes that stood out to me in his speech was “Indeed he described the most creative (when in this mood) as being childlike. For they were able to play with ideas… to explore them… not for any immediate practical purpose but just for enjoyment. Play for its own sake.” I wanted to create the feeling of being childlike again by making a book that could resemble a children’s book by using bright colors, simple and fun illustrations, and a limited color palette.
